Here at Unitas, we see huge benefits in welcoming young people for work experience. As well as giving people the opportunity to try opportunities in our business before they decide on their career options, we’ve been able to:
- Build links between ourselves and schools and colleges.
- Demonstrate our commitment to our staff both existing and future.
- Raise our profile locally, highlighting Unitas as a quality employer.
We have a robust Work Experience policy which ensures equality, fairness and a standardised experience for anyone intending to join us on Work Experience.
Our opportunities are open to young people aged 16 and over. Departments throughout our business, including Trades, offer week long placements. We are able to take younger adults, however these have to be in office based roles for insurance purposes.
Meet Kyle:
During November and December last year, we welcomed Kyle Till on an extended three week placement. Kyle is the son of Steve, our Electrical Operational Team Leader and is studying for a Foundation Level PWATG qualification in Pool Plant Operations, with the intention of making his career in this field.
Kyle is hoping to enter a Plumbing Apprenticeship which he knows will help him greatly in his chosen area of work, and worked within both the Pool Plant Team and the Plumbing Team. For the Pool Plant work, he was supervised by Simon Evans and Ken Pawson and for the Plumbing work, he was supervised by Rob Parry and Paul Clarke.
Kyle made a fantastic impression on both of the teams, working before 6am as our Pool Operatives do and ensuring he “mucked in” with every task and job.
Discussing his experience, Kyle said:
“I’ve listened to my dad talk about what Unitas do at the leisure centres and I think that’s where I first even thought about what needs to be done, to keep leisure centres running. Simon and Ken are two of his team and they always seem to be working on something interesting, now I’ve seen it for myself! Everything from daily water testing on the swimming pools, to setting up snow machines for an event at Dimensions.
I can’t believe just how much I enjoyed working with Rob and Paul on plumbing jobs. They didn’t just show me a wide range of different job’s, they encouraged me get involved and get some great practical experience.
I can’t tell you how fantastic everyone at Unitas has been, they made me feel welcome, useful and safe on every task.’’
As a business, we’re hugely grateful for the time and energy that Simon, Ken, Rob and Paul gave in welcoming Kyle, guiding him and ensuring his time was safe and productive.
At the end of his placement, Kyle told us, “I’m very grateful to Unitas for this opportunity and would like to thank Mark (McGill) and Mark (Tolley) for this experience. All the people I met at Unitas were fantastic, but I can’t thank Simon, Ken, Rob and Paul enough.”
